An “open secret” is a fact or idea that is widely known but not openly acknowledged or a piece of information that is not widely known, despite being freely available. This piece has national and international relevancy with regard to safety and security, including the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident and the Edward Snowden leaking of the NSA secretly collecting data from citizens. It also references more personal views and lifestyles that continue to be the subject of contradictory opinions and persistent scrutiny. Placed in the gallery window, Berlier’s neon sign plays off the traditional “Open” for business signs in storefronts.
